One of the first things I noticed when I started working out was how stiff my body had become. I wasn't able to touch my toes and my range of motion was limited. This seemed like a basic thing I needed to address to avoid hurting myself during my exercise routine. I've never been someone with enough patience to just stand and stretch for an hour, so obviously I needed something more active. 

My wife has been doing Pilates for years, and recommended an instructor for me (for those in the Seattle area, I went to Balance Within Movement Studio in Redmond, WA). The instructor worked very closely with me to get me moving naturally again and the exercises were very low key and relaxing compared to what I was doing at the gym.
